75% of units handed over by the end of 2006. The rental community in Dubai breaths a collective sigh of relief...

If it's 75% of the total 21,000 then that's only 15,000 apartments which are mostly studios and 1 bdrms. Enough for 20,000-30,000 people. The population of Dubai has probably increased by about 200,000+ in 2006. Admittedly a large proportion of them are likely to be living in labor camps or other staff type accommodation but all the same, there's still a lot of apartments needed.

International City units to be delivered this year
Staff Report

Dubai: Nakheel yesterday said it will start delivering completed units in its International City project by the end of this year.

The project, which started construction in 2003, will have 75 per cent of all residential buildings completed by the end of the year and is gearing up for a staggered handover.

International City General Manager Rashid Al Helli said, "Nakheel is on schedule with the construction and development of its International City project. We have already finished work on the project's infrastructure, such as roads, internal routes, lighting installation, electricity and water. The districts are being constructed phase by phase. We expect to fin-alise most of the residential buildings by the end of 2006, and are starting a phased handover of completed areas."

The remaining buildings will be completed by 2007. In addition, Phase One of Al Warsan Lake development has also been completed.

On schedule

"In order to meet the challenges of a project of this scale, we chose to take a modular-development and phased-construction approach.

This has helped us deliver on schedule and as planned. International City aims to blend a variety of activities and a wide range of architectural themes all in one location. The first stage of landscaping on the main roads is being finalised as we speak; landscaping of the internal roads will commence in December. The project also covers Al Warsan Lake, which is home to many species of rare and exotic birds. We are currently undertaking detailed planning of this delicate eco-system" he added.

International City combines commercial, residential, retail and tourism interests. The project has attracted strong interest from local, regional and international investors, including retail giants.
