Dubai British School teaching job scam

Postby shawarma » 05 Nov 2009, 13:04

Dubai British School (DBS) is a real school in Dubai, and a pretty good one as private UK curriculum schools in the UAE go. But they are the victim of what appears to be some hoax job advertisements for ESL teachers which use the name of the school and the school principal, Andrew Homden, fraudulently (Mr Homden really is the DBS principal).

Dubai British School reviews - topic for general DBS discussion. And if you want to apply for a Dubai British School teaching job, contact them directly, or at list visit the careers page on their website - they usually advertise current vacancies there.

Teaching jobs in UAE - information and suggestions for job applications.

The fake jobs seem to be posted mostly on internet websites for ESL teachers during 2009 and 2010. They've probably stopped by now, at least when it comes to using the Dubai British School name. But that probably means the same organisation is looking for another school name to use.

As with any job advertisement, try and contact the school or company directly to find out if they really are advertising the position, and look up their contact details independently from the job ad.

Details of job advertisement:

Offer: Teaching job for US$4500 per month
Name/s: Andy Homden, Andrew Homden, Ibrahim Zabiba, Mr Zabiba
Contact email:
Website: (this is not the official DBS website)
Contact numbers: 00971501874916, +971501874916
Other contacts: UAE Ministry of Labor for a work visa at (this is not a UAE MOL email address)

Questionable requests for visa processing or job registration fees of £350, AED 2,500, or similar. According to UAE Labour Law, employers and recruitment agencies are not supposed to ask employees for visa fees or registration fees.

Dubai British School website has this notice warning potential job applicants:

Beware of Internet Fraud
Notice to candidates applying for positions at Dubai British School.
It has come to our attention during 2009 that a number of colleagues around the world have received bogus “contracts” offering positions at our school.

We are aware of a current fraud in which teachers of ESL are being targeted, offered contracts and then asked to send large sums of money to process visas and work permits.
Please note:
• We always conduct “live” interviews, normally in person and occasionally by Skype or telephone
• Our salary scales are NOT designated in US Dollars, Pounds or Euros
• We NEVER ask for the transfer of money to process visa applications prior to arrival
Therefore NEVER send money if asked to by an apparent representative of our school, especially if asked to send to a Currency Exchange agency.
If you have been asked to send money, you can be sure that the “offer” is fraudulent.
We have reported a number of these bogus offers to the Dubai authorities.
At the time of writing (late June 2009) we are NOT advertising any position as being vacant. We are in regular contact with all our appointees for 2009 about arrangements for arrival at DBS later this year.
Andrew Homden,
Principal, DBS,
June 25, 2009.
