Jet Airways India Wins Approval to Fly to Middle East
By Bibhudatta Pradhan

Sept. 14 (Bloomberg) -- Jet Airways (India) Ltd., the nation's biggest domestic carrier, received government approval to fly to the Middle East, ending state monopoly on routes that service about 4 million Indians working in the region.

Starting Jan. 1, Jet Airways will be allowed to operate flights to Kuwait, Oman, Qatar and Bahrain, India's civil aviation ministry said in a statement released in New Delhi today. The airline's request to fly to Dubai and Abu Dhabi is being considered, it said.

India in 2005 allowed private airlines with more than five years of domestic operations to start flights overseas, except to countries in the Middle East. Jet Airways and Sahara Airlines Ltd., which Jet Airways bought and renamed Jetlite in April, are the only private Indian carriers flying on international routes.

Jet Airways shares rose as much as 2.7 percent on the Bombay Stock Exchange. They traded at 899 rupees, up 0.3 percent, as of 1:32 p.m. local time.

Jet Airways gets govt nod for Gulf routes

NEW DELHI (Reuters) - Jet Airways Ltd, India's top private airline, can fly to selected destinations in the Gulf from Jan. 1, the civil aviation ministry said in a statement on Friday.

Jet had applied for rights to fly to Kuwait, Oman, Qatar, Bahrain, Dubai and Abu Dhabi on July 18, the statement said, adding that the final two locations were still under consideration.

It gave no further details.

Jet will fly from New Delhi, Mumbai and Kerala.

Indian carriers are currently entitled to 85,481 seats per week on Gulf routes, of which they are using 58 percent, the ministry estimates.

Jet Airways already flies to South and southeast Asia, the United States, Canada, London and Brussels and plans to add more routes to Europe and North America.

It aims to get half its total revenue from overseas operations by 2009 as the domestic market becomes increasingly competitive.
