Dubai Hospitals

Also hospitals, medical centers and clinics for the UAE.

Hospitals in Dubai and the UAE

Medical care in Dubai and the UAE varies, as anywhere, from poor to excellent. The UAE has about 35-40 Government hospitals and a similar number of private hospitals although with developments like Dubai Healthcare City (DHCC), there is rapid expansion in the number of private institutes ready to fix your bones and take your blood. Additionally, there are 150 or more Primary Healthcare Centers in the UAE.

Government hospitals often get a bad rap but in terms of medical attention, this is perhaps a bit harsh, notwithstanding the press reports of less than satisfactory medical attention. You will probably find the biggest difference between government and private hospitals is in "Customer Service" for want of a better term. Dormitory style rooms rather than private hotel rooms are the norm, and staff shortages mean nurses especially, are overworked and underpaid. But you will usually get the medical attention you need. Sometimes, for major medical procedures, a private hospital will ship you off to a government hospital anyway (less likely as Dubai gets bigger and more facilities are developed).

Welcare Hospital

Welcare Hospital is in the Garhood / Garhoud area of Dubai, near the Irish Village / Dubai Tennis Stadium / Aviation Club, and provides a comprehensive range of medical services. Welcare opened in May 1998, not long after the American Hospital opened up and was thought of as providing a similar alternative - popular with Western expats, and a little cheaper than the American Hospital.

Welcare Hospital is part of the Welcare World Group which provides healthcare in the Middle East. Chairman of the Welcare Group is Sunny Varkey, who is also well known as the Chairman of the Varkey Group - a UAE based conglomerate of various businesses.

Awards for Welcare Hospital include the Dubai Quality Appreciation award and ISO 9001:2000 certification. A Joint Commission International Accreditation application is in progress (according to Welcare press release 26 May 2008).

Bur Dubai Hospitals

Postby shawarma on 01 Apr 2009, 23:43

It's probably the specialist doctor that is more important - good hospitals can have bad doctors and nurses, and good doctors and nurses can wind up working at bad hospitals. You may want to consider visiting a specialist medical clinic for a consultation. My own satisfaction level depends a lot on whether or not the doctor can, and is willing, to explain medical issues in a way I can understand, and will answer my questions to my satisfaction, not his or hers. These are three hospitals in or near Bur Dubai that I've had experience with. I think they all have mixed reports but personally I had no complaints about any of them (none of the visits were back related though).

American Hospital, near Lamcy Plaza. Expensive and mixed reports but I'd still consider it as a first stop for medical issues.
Iranian Hospital, Al Wasl Road. Cheaper and only went there once but the medical care didn't ring any alarm bells.
Belhoul Hospital, or Belhoul European Hospital, Al Diyafa Street.
