Well, corporal punishment is alive and well at Emirates English Speaking School (EESS) according to a Gulf News report today (08 February 2008). A grade 3 student at EESS, Hassam Amir, says his teacher hit him with a metal ruler and gave him a scar on his forehead. Apparently the teacher has hit other students in the past. Comments in the report included:

• "I was joking with my classmates when she hit me near my eye. When I saw blood coming out I got scared and I cried," said young Mr Amir
• "I was not informed by the school management or the teacher about the incident," said Hassan's mother, Naila Aftab. She also said "I was not allowed to see the teacher - the principal requested that I write a letter of complaint and that he will investigate the issue,"
• "We are looking into it." said the school principal, S.S.U. Tabrez. Gulf News said they were not allowed to speak to the teacher.
