Dubai College exam results

Postby shawarma on 05 Sep 2008, 15:39

The National newspaper had a report this morning of good exam results for Dubai College students with 25 students receiving commendations from Edexcel for being in the top 10 students in individual subjects at international schools. Fifteen at GCSE level, and 10 at A-level for the 2007-2008 academic year. Is that due to good teaching, good students, or good pre-selection? Some other numbers:

A-Level A grades: 62.6% (25.9% average in Britain)
A-Level A to C pass rate: 95.4%
GCSE A* or A: 80% of entries (20.7% average in UK excluding Scotland)
GCSE A* to C pass rate: 99.6%

Dubai College new boss

Postby shawarma on 19 Sep 2008, 18:10

The National newspaper today (19 September 2008) had an article about the new headmaster of Dubai College, Dr Carlo Ferrario (previous head was Eric Parton).

Dr Ferrario was previously the deputy head master of Dubai College?

According to the report, Dr Ferrario says the new branches of UK private schools such as Repton School in Dubai, can't match the quality of the established independent schools already in Dubai, such as Dubai College. Repton school did not comment on the doctor's comments. Rest of article was mostly about Dr Ferrario - he taught at Sherborne School in Dorset, and was then deputy headmaster at Clifton College in Bristol, and St Benedict’s School in Ealing.

“A school cannot transplant from one environment into a totally alien environment and expect to be producing the same thing right from the start,” Dr Ferrario said. “Just because Repton has 450 years of tradition in the UK, that doesn’t mean it will immediately reproduce that tradition. You don’t create quality straight away. It takes time to establish a reputation. Dubai College has been doing that for 30 years.”

There was mention that Dubai College may consider offering Internationale Baccalaureate (IB), probably in addition to the current A-levels rather than as a replacement. See the Dubai curriculum guide for a summary of courses offered in UAE private schools.
