Some complaints from teachers posted on eslteachersboard.com

WARNING --> MADAR International School / Edugates, Al Ain, UAE (05 February 2005)
eslteachersboard.com/cgi-bin/forum/index.pl?noframes;read=5512

Part of first post follows. Several similar posts in same topic, a couple of posts stating the opposite (ie everything is good there). A claim made that MOE is investigating the school. No further information found apart from these posts, however, the conditions described are not implausible for a UAE school.

Be careful before you apply for, or accept, a teaching position at MADAR International School, Al Ain, UAE, or any other school run by a company called Edugates, for the following reasons:

-The so-called "comfortable" accommodation provided by the school (that was supposed to parallel Western standards of living) turned out to be an old school building that was hastily transformed into scattered stinky rooms with leaking ceilings and stained walls and carpets and old, dirty furniture. The promised recreation room turned out to be a rat-infested storage room with cracked walls and a leaking ceiling. When teachers asked about the exact address of the provided accommodation premises before signing the contract, a false address was provided by the school's director and owner of Edugates.

-The school is always late in paying salaries. They do not adhere to paying the salaries at the end of every month, as the signed contract states. Some teachers are still waiting for summer pay dating back to the 2003-2004 academic year!

-During the negotiations stage, the director offered nothing but lies and deceit regarding the school’s facilities and resources. He boasted the presence of a “Multimedia Resource Centre” at the school, e-learning software, and a long list of books and resources that all turned out to be non-existent at the school.

Another claim that Search Associates have banned them from attending job fairs.

Madar banned by Search Associates - ESL discussion
eslteachersboard.com/cgi-bin/forum/index.pl?noframes;read=7733&quote=1

Madar International School has been banned from participating in Search Associates (U.K. based) fairs and events. After a site visit by the Head of Search Associates of the school and the provided “residence” (a.k.a. Rushd school’s old building), Madar was barred from participating in the Dubai Fair that took place in January/2005 and future fairs. A South African recruiter was also subsequently looking into Madar problems.

Moreover, the school is under scrutiny by the Ministry of Education, especially after the crack-downs on private schools throughout the UAE. In addition to that, the Ministry of Labour’s head inspector deemed rooms at the Madar accommodations as unhealthy after a site visit.

Madar International School

Some advertisements for this school in the press recently.

Current owner appears to be Bin Salem Group - but there's a logo for Edugates on the adverts as well.

"The home of excellent education" says the ads.

I work for Deans International School Ajman which is affilliated with Edugates and it is the best place I have ever worked. The people are brillient to work with and there level of education is of a very high standard. I cannot say what the school was like before Edugates got involved with it but I know the school is a very good one now. If you read what has been said about the school you will notice that it is the same post on all educational websites, posted by the same person which was also posted years ago. Since Edugates took it over there has been no other negative posts.

I totally agree with the warning post about this school as I was a former teacher in that school.
The school is not professional when it comes to teating teachers, teachers have to work 8 striaght hours sometimes, the teachers never continue their years
ALot of them resign in the middle of the year because they can't handle all the pressure that is on their shoulder.
As i contacted one of the teaching agencies she personally told me that she refuses to hire any teacher in Madar school because of the poor reputation.
The accomodation is poor as well it fails to meet the standards that everyone wants.
